Project Overview:
Located at the River Don tributary near Went Bridge, this flood defence project aimed to mitigate the recurring flood risks that had affected the area in recent years.
Key Works Undertaken:
- Elevated the riverbank using imported clay.
- Utilised Trimble GPS technology for precise material placement.
- Compacted the new bund with a 13-ton sheepsfoot roller.
- Installed a Grasscrete track to ensure vehicular access along the bund.
While carrying out multiple projects on the Environmental Agencies YARP Scheme we were involved with the elevating of the riverbank of the river Don at the Went Bridge tributary. The work was carried out to lower the risk of the river breaking its banks as the area had been flooded multiple times in recent years.
To carry out this project the topsoil was stripped from the river banking and stockpiled at the bottom of the batter, we then engineered imported clay starting at the toe of the batter and building up in layers keying into existing river banking and compacting with a specialized Roller to interlock the layers, once the target elevation had been met using our GPS enabled machines, we were then required to install a Grass-Crete track along the top of the bund to allow access if needed for a 32 tonne mobile water pump.
Upon completion we were also asked to install a carpark for public use and EA representatives, this was carried out using a GPS enabled Bulldozer to leave a very fine and tidy finish. The works have subsequently been tested with heavy rainfalls and have stood up to the challenge. A very interesting and enjoyable project to be involved in.
Results:
The newly constructed flood defence has successfully withstood subsequent heavy rainfall events, providing enhanced protection to the surrounding community.
