Stainforth Flood Aleviation

Project Overview 

MWS Contracts was appointed to carry out vital flood defence works along a tidal riverbank near Stainforth—an area historically prone to repeated flooding. As part of the wider Yorkshire Asset Recovery Project, the objective was to reinforce and raise the existing flood bank, redirecting floodwaters away from populated areas to minimise future risk and environmental impact. 

Scope of Works 

  • 2km of flood bank raised to target elevations using engineered imported clay fill 
  • Installation of spillways to allow controlled overflow into low-risk, uninhabited zones 
  • GPS-guided machinery is used to ensure precise formation grading and material efficiency 
  • Reinstatement of topsoil followed by hydroseeding to promote vegetation growth and slope stability 

Methodology & Delivery 

The project began with a full topsoil strip of the existing flood defence bund. Engineered clay was then imported and placed in compacted layers, keyed into the existing structure to prevent weak joints. Achieving the correct compaction was critical to ensure the flood bank’s long-term performance. 

Once target elevations were reached, GPS-controlled plant was used to finely grade the surface—maximising accuracy while minimising waste of impermeable clay. The previously stripped topsoil was then carefully reinstated and tracked in to seal the surface. 

To stabilise the newly shaped bund, hydroseeding was applied across the topsoil. This fast, cost-effective method promoted strong vegetation growth, with root systems helping to bind the surface material and resist erosion during future flood events.
